Adaptative response of Listeria monocylogenes to osmotic and chill stress: consequences on food safety. ArchiMer
Elmnasser, Noura; Ritz Bricaud, Magali; Guillou, Sandrine; Leroi, Francoise; Orange, Nicole; Bakhrouf, Amira; Federighi, Michel.
Listeria monocytogenes is it psychrotrophic food-borne pathogen. This organism is problematic for food production industry due to its ubiquitous distribution ill nature and its tolerance to condition of osmotic and chill stress. One common strategy employed by many bacteria and by L. monocytogenes for adaptation to osmotic stress is by the intracellular accumulation of compatible solutes. Two different types of adaptative reponses to low temperature have undertaken by L. monocytogenes. One of the responses is accomplished by adjusting membrane fluidity through alteration of the membrane fatty acid composition. A second response consists ill the accumulation of osmolytes. In this brief review we will focus on these general systems Which are Of particular...

Effect of environmental factors on the germination of Megathyrsus maximus: an invasive weed in sugarcane in Argentina Planta Daninha
C. Cabrera,Debora; Sobrero,María T.; Pece,Marta; Chaila,Salvador.
Abstract Background: Megathyrsus maximus (Jacq.) is a perennial weed that affects many crops. In Argentina, sugarcane is the most affected. Objective: Study effective techniques to break dormancy and the effect of environmental factors on the germination of this weed. Methods: Experiments were carried out in cabinet incubators twice, with five replicates per treatment. The experimental unit was made up for 50 seeds. Results: Seed dormancy was strongly associated with the presence of glumes. Manual extractions of glumes and immersion in sulphuric acid were the most effective techniques for breaking dormancy. Megathyrsus maximus did not depend on light to germinate, and it did so both under a 12 h-light-dark photoperiod and in complete darkness, with...

Effectiveness of halo-tolerant, auxin producing Pseudomonas and Rhizobium strains to improve osmotic stress tolerance in mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) BJM
Ahmad,Maqshoof; Zahir,Zahir A.; Nazli,Farheen; Akram,Fareeha; Arshad,Muhammad; Khalid,Muhammad.
Halo-tolerant, auxin producing bacteria could be used to induce salt tolerance in plants. A number of Rhizobium and auxin producing rhizobacterial strains were assessed for their ability to tolerate salt stress by conducting osmoadaptation assay. The selected strains were further screened for their ability to induce osmotic stress tolerance in mung bean seedlings under salt-stressed axenic conditions in growth pouch/jar trials. Three most effective strains of Rhizobium and Pseudomonas containing ACC-deaminase were evaluated in combination, for their ability to induce osmotic stress tolerance in mung bean at original, 4, and 6 dS m-1 under axenic conditions. Results showed that sole inoculation of Rhizobium and Pseudomonas strains improved the total dry...

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AFFECTING SEED GERMINATION OF COMMON TEASEL (Dipsacus fullonum) Planta Daninha
DADDARIO,J.F.F.; BENTIVEGNA,D.J.; TUCAT,G.; FERNÁNDEZ,O.A..
ABSTRACT Common teasel is a widespread, invasive species that has been introduced in Buenos Aires province, Argentina, where it alters the species composition of protected areas and native grasslands. A better understanding of seed germination behavior is essential for predicting its invasion potential in new areas and would be useful for developing effective management strategies. This research, conducted under laboratory conditions, evaluated the influence of several environmental factors such as pH, constant temperature, osmotic stress, salt stress and dry storage, on germination and rate of germination of common teasel seed. Between-year variation in germination responses was also examined. Seed germination was not affected by different pH levels....

Germination and emergence of Stachytarpheta cayennensis and Ipomoea asarifolia Planta Daninha
Dias Filho,M.B..
Understanding how weed seed germination and emergence respond to environmental factors is critical to determining their adaptive capabilities and potential for infestations, and could also aid in the development of effective control practices. Germination of Ipomoea asarifolia (Desr.) Roem. & Schultz and Stachytarpheta cayennensis (Rich) Vahl. decreased linearly with decreasing osmotic potentials. Also, increasing osmotic stress delayed germination of Ipomoea more than that of Stachytarpheta. Ipomoea germination was insensitive to light, while Stachytarpheta showed a positive photoblastic behavior. Nitrate had a negative effect on germination of Ipomoea seed under both light and dark conditions but stimulated dark germination of Stachytarpheta....

Germination Ecology of Lathyrus aphaca, a Problematic Weed of Wheat Crop under Semi-Arid Conditions of Pakistan Planta Daninha
AAMIR,M.; KHAN,E.A.; BALOCH,M.S.; ASLAM,M..
ABSTRACT: Lathyrus aphaca is an aggressive dicotyledonous weed. The effect of different agroecological components/factors on the germination ecology of this weed was explored under a glasshouse and laboratory condition in 2014. The germination response of L. aphaca was lower at high temperature while maximum seed germination was found at 15/12 oC (day/night). Light significantly stimulated L. aphaca germination; nevertheless, substantial germination occurred under dark conditions. More than 86-90% of L. aphaca seeds germinated at pH level of 6.2-7.5. A significant quantity of seed germinated at 250 mM NaCl. There was no germination at -1 MPa. When the temperature was lower than 20/15 oC (day/night) initiation time of germination and germination index (GI)...

In silico identification of known osmotic stress responsive genes from Arabidopsis in soybean and Medicago Genet. Mol. Biol.
Soares-Cavalcanti,Nina M.; Belarmino,Luis C.; Kido,Ederson A.; Wanderley-Nogueira,Ana C.; Bezerra-Neto,João P.; Cavalcanti-Lira,Rafaela; Pandolfi,Valesca; Nepomuceno,Alexandre L.; Abdelnoor,Ricardo V.; Nascimento,Leandro C.; Benko-Iseppon,Ana M..
Plants experience various environmental stresses, but tolerance to these adverse conditions is a very complex phenomenon. The present research aimed to evaluate a set of genes involved in osmotic response, comparing soybean and medicago with the well-described Arabidopsis thaliana model plant. Based on 103 Arabidopsis proteins from 27 categories of osmotic stress response, comparative analyses against Genosoja and Medicago truncatula databases allowed the identification of 1,088 soybean and 1,210 Medicago sequences. The analysis showed a high number of sequences and high diversity, comprising genes from all categories in both organisms. Genes with unknown function were among the most representative, followed by transcription factors, ion transport...

Osmoregulation pattern and salinity tolerance of the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) during post-embryonic development ArchiMer
Chong-robles, Jennyfers; Charmantier, Guy; Boulo, Viviane; Lizarraga-valdez, Joel; Enriquez-paredes, Luis M.; Giffard-mena, Ivone.
The euryhaline white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei lives in both coastal and oceanic areas through ontogeny. Its osmoregulation pattern and variations in its tolerance to salinity are partially known from several studies under different experimental conditions (developmental stages, salinities and acclimation procedures). Although L. vannamei is recognized as one of the most euryhaline penaeid species, with adults and juveniles exhibiting an hyper-hypo-osmoregulatory pattern and being able to tolerate a wide salinity range, little is known on larval and early postlarval strategies to cope with salinity fluctuations. In order to establish their euryhalinity range and to fully understand the ontogenetic changes in L. vannamei osmoregulatory pattern, we...

Seed germination and early growth of physic nut seedlings under salinity stress Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
Oliveira, Bruno Leminski Neto de; Steiner, Fábio; Honda, Guilherme Bento; Machado, Juan Sotta.
Soil salinity is one of the major abiotic stresses that limit seed germination and plant growth, causing yield loss in crop species. The phytotoxic effects of salt stress on seed germination and early growth of physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.) seedlings were investigated in the present study. Physic nut seeds were subjected to five levels of salinity [0 (control); 25; 50; 75 and 100 mmol L-1 of NaCl], using the solution-paper method, with five replications. The experimental unit consisted in a germitest paper roll with 25 physic nut seeds. Salt treatments were evaluated based on the following tests: first count of germination test (7 days), total germination (12 days) and early growth of physic nut seedlings (12 days). Results showed that the addition of...

Thermodynamic evaluation and modeling of proton and water exchange associated with benzamidine and berenil binding to ß-trypsin BJMBR
Pereira,M.T.; Silva-Alves,J.M.; Martins-José,A.; Lopes,J.C.D.; Santoro,M.M..
Serine-proteases are involved in vital processes in virtually all species. They are important targets for researchers studying the relationships between protein structure and activity, for the rational design of new pharmaceuticals. Trypsin was used as a model to assess a possible differential contribution of hydration water to the binding of two synthetic inhibitors. Thermodynamic parameters for the association of bovine ß-trypsin (homogeneous material, observed 23,294.4 ± 0.2 Da, theoretical 23,292.5 Da) with the inhibitors benzamidine and berenil at pH 8.0, 25ºC and with 25 mM CaCl2, were determined using isothermal titration calorimetry and the osmotic stress method. The association constant for berenil was about 12 times higher compared to the one for...
